Most yachtsmen regard Desolation Sound Marine Provincial Park as the most beautiful cruising ground in British Columbia and one of the premier sailing playgrounds in the world. With sixty miles of breathtaking coastline, intricate waterways, small islands, and numerous attractive bays, coves, nooks, and crannies, there is enough to delight even the most demanding adventurers. Only your time and imagination will limit the endless variety of places to discover and activities to pursue in this unforgettable marine park, the largest in BC. One of the prime attractions of these waters is their warmth in the summer months, which makes them ideal for swimming, snorkeling, and scuba diving.
Desolation Sound (French: Baie Desolation) is a deep water sound at the northern end of the Salish Sea and of the Sunshine Coast in British Columbia. The sound has always been inhabited by tribes of the Tla’amin and falls within the traditional territories of the Klahoose First Nation, Tla’amin Nation, and Homalco First Nations. Major provincial parks located within the sound include Desolation Sound Marine Provincial Park, Malaspina Provincial Park, Okeover Arm Provincial Park, and Roscoe Bay Provincial Park.
Desolation Sound possesses a magical magnetism that draws boaters and paddlers from distant shores. Most of those who arrive aboard boats tend to congregate in popular anchorages, such as Prideaux Haven, Tenedos Bay, and Grace Harbour, much as ‘fifthwheelers’ converge on RV parks. Great views of three waterfalls and abundant opportunities to view orcas, whales, and sealife can be found here.
